How to Serve Hamburger Steaks:

While there are tons of creative ways to serve this dish, the classic favorite is to spoon those rich, savory onions and gravy over a bed of creamy mashed potatoes. Other delicious options include:

  • Cauliflower mash for a low-carb alternative
  • Steamed rice or quinoa
  • Roasted vegetables or sautéed greens
  • A simple garden salad on the side

Ingredients

  • 1 lb grass-fed ground beef (organic, grass-fed, 85% lean)
  • 1/2 cup almond flour (fine, organic)
  • 1 large organic egg
  • 1 tsp salt (plus more to taste I used this thyme sea salt blend, but you can just add some thyme separately)
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 sweet onions, thinly sliced
  • 8 oz. mushrooms, sliced.
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour, if needed)
  • 2 cups organic beef broth (Use the code COOKINGKATIELADY for 20% off Kettle & Fire organic broths!)
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • Slurry: 1 tbsp cornstarch whisked with 1 tbsp water

How To Make Them

  1. Form the Patties: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, almond flour, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix until fully combined, then shape into 4 evenly sized patties.
  2. Brown the Patties: Heat a cast iron skillet over medium/high heat. Add a little oil if needed, then place the patties in the skillet. Sear on both sides until nicely browned (about 3–4 minutes per side). Be sure to only flip them once to get a nice golden sear. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Cook the Onions & Mushrooms: In the same skillet, add the sliced sweet onions. Sauté over medium heat for 5–7 minutes, or until they become soft and golden. Really take the time to get the onions nice and caramelized for the best flavor. Then add the mushrooms and cook for 2-3 minutes longer, or until cooked down.
  4. Make the Roux: Sprinkle the flour over the onions & mushrooms and stir well to coat. Let the mixture cook for 2–3 minutes to eliminate any raw flour taste—this is your roux, which helps thicken the gravy.
  5. Build the Gravy: Slowly pour in the beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add the Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, and additional salt and pepper to taste. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
  6. Thicken with Slurry: In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and water to create a slurry. Turn the heat down to low. Slowly pour it into the gravy while stirring, allowing it to thicken.
  7. Finish the Dish: Return the hamburger patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Cover the pan and let everything simmer for 15 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy has thickened to your liking.
