Why You’ll Love These Chocolate Hazelnut French Toast Roll-Ups

These aren’t your average French toast. Rolling the chocolate hazelnut spread inside gives you a little bit of warm, melty chocolate in every bite, while cooking them in a skillet creates that golden French toast coating on every side.

They’re also incredibly simple to customize. You can coat them in coconut sugar for a sweet cinnamon-toast-like finish, drizzle them with maple syrup, add more chocolate hazelnut spread on top, or just eat them straight out of the skillet.

And because we’re using protein powder and low carb bread, they’re an easy way to give a traditionally sweet breakfast a little nutritional upgrade.

Ingredients

  • 10 slices Eat Royo Low Carb Artisan Bread (Use the code COOKINGKATIELADY at checkout to get 10% off your order!)
  • 2 eggs (large)
  • 1/2 cup milk (of choice)
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 30 g protein powder (You can use the discount code KATIE10 for a discount on Truvani protein here)
  • 1/3 cup chocolate hazelnut spread (or to taste)
  • Coconut sugar (to taste, for coating)
  • Butter (for cooking)

How To Make Them

  1. Make the French toast mixture. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cinnamon, salt, and protein powder until well combined. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the bread. Cut the crusts off each slice of bread. Spread about 2 teaspoons of chocolate hazelnut spread onto each slice, then roll each slice up tightly.
  3. Coat the roll-ups. Dip each roll-up into the French toast mixture, turning to make sure all sides are evenly coated.
  4. Cook until golden. Heat a buttered skillet over medium heat. Place the roll-ups seam-side down and cook, turning every minute or so, until golden brown on all sides and cooked through.
  5. Add the coconut sugar. If desired, roll the French toast roll-ups in coconut sugar immediately after cooking while they’re still warm. Serve. Enjoy warm with maple syrup, extra chocolate hazelnut spread, or simply eat them on their own!

Why Is Consuming Protein Important?

  • Protein is nutrient-rich, so it helps you stay fuller longer. You are more likely to eat less when you have high protein meals because you won’t have the munchies!
  • It boosts your metabolism & increases fat burning.
  • It increases muscles & strength. If you are lifting weights and not eating enough protein, you aren’t going to see much of a difference!
  • It lowers your blood pressure.

Tips for the Best French Toast Roll-Ups

Make sure you place the roll-ups seam-side down first when they hit the skillet. This helps seal the bread so they don’t start unraveling while you cook them.

I also recommend keeping your skillet around medium heat rather than turning it up too high. You want enough time for the French toast coating to cook through and the chocolate hazelnut filling to get warm and melty without burning the outside.

And don’t overdo the filling! About 2 teaspoons per slice gives you plenty of chocolate hazelnut flavor while still allowing you to roll the bread tightly.

Ways to Serve Them

These chocolate French toast roll-ups are delicious straight out of the skillet, especially when the center is still warm and melty. I love finishing mine with coconut sugar, but you could also serve them with pure maple syrup, fresh strawberries, raspberries, sliced banana, or an extra drizzle of chocolate hazelnut spread.

For an even more filling breakfast, pair them with fresh fruit, Greek yogurt, eggs, or your favorite breakfast protein.

Tips and Variations

  • Use vanilla protein powder for the best flavor.
  • Add fresh blueberries for a fruity twist.
  • Stir mini chocolate chips into the bread mixture for a sweeter version.
  • Swap the challah rolls for your favorite high-protein bread.
  • Add chopped pecans or walnuts to the streusel topping for extra crunch.
  • Serve with Greek yogurt for an additional protein boost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these French toast roll-ups ahead of time?
They’re definitely best served fresh because that’s when the outside is golden and the chocolate center is warm and melty. You can, however, store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat them when you’re ready to eat.

How do I reheat French toast roll-ups?
I recommend reheating them in a skillet or air fryer to help bring back some of that crisp exterior. You can also microwave them if you’re short on time, although they will be softer.

Can I use a different filling?
Absolutely. Peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, or another chocolate spread would all work. You could even add thinly sliced strawberries or bananas with the chocolate hazelnut spread.

Can I make these dairy-free?
Yes. Use your favorite dairy-free milk and dairy-free butter or cooking oil. Just make sure your protein powder and chocolate hazelnut spread are dairy-free as well.

Do I have to coat them in coconut sugar?
No! The coconut sugar is completely optional. They’re plenty flavorful without it, especially if you’re serving them with maple syrup or extra chocolate hazelnut spread.
